On Earth in the days before the New Foundation Project began, an island off the coast of Washington State is a dark-sky sanctuary. Eccentric visionary Peter Caladen has established a research center there, and he assembles a team of brilliant scientists for his ambitious, fringe project to recover and expand the technology of time travel. Ginny Marcotte, who is studying human empathy, visits the island to support her partner, Simon Tollis, who has just lost funding for his research into machine consciousness. When Ginny disappears, Simon’s quest to find her reveals connections between their research that could be the key to a fresh start for humanity.
